Pledge of Resistance to Immigration Raids

What is the Pledge of Resistance?

Families who have sought asylum in Newcastle are being dragged screaming from their homes in the early hours of the morning. Then they're being forced onto planes back to countries where they face persecution, torture, death and other mistreatment. Why do you think the police are coming so early in the morning? The government and their police know what they're doing is wrong, and they know if local people saw what was happening, they would be against it.

Why do you think this is happening?

Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution. So if being an asylum seeker isn't a crime, why is the government treating people like criminals? British companies and the British Labour government are robbing resources and labour power from countries all over the world. Many of the countries asylum seekers are fleeing from have repressive governments which are supported by the British government, because they help to keep wages low for British companies. Many asylum seekers would much rather be in their own country, but have been forced to flee because of British interference. The British ruling class only cares about money for themselves. They don't care about the people being exploited to make that money, whether in Africa or here in Newcastle. That's why we need to care about each other and stand together.

What can you do about it?

We have held demonstrations, petitioned MPs and collected signatures, but still the government refuses to listen. The deportations continue. We are committed to peaceful protest and the legal process wherever possible, but where the government continues to close its ears we will not sit back and allow them to commit these injustices. We are looking for people who are prepared to make a promise that if an immigration raid happens in their local area, they will come out in the street, and take whatever action they see fit to defend the family.

If you would like more information about the Pledge please contact TCAR. We would be happy to meet up with you and explain more. In the past TCAR has organised workshops on legal rights so let us know if this would be helpful and we can do so again.
