How to get involved
Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) is run entirely by volunteers. There are many ways of contributing.

Why be a member of TCAR?
Everybody can come to TCAR demonstrations and meetings and everybody can speak. However, only members of TCAR can receive emergency help from TCAR if they are in danger. And all members of TCAR can vote at General Meetings. Remember, TCAR is not a charity, it is not somebody else helping us because they feel pity. In TCAR we don't want pity. We can help each other because together we are stronger! If you agree you should be a member of TCAR.
How to become a member of TCAR
Members of TCAR must come to a TCAR activity at least once every 3 months. If you do this then you are a member of TCAR*. It is especially important to come to emergency demonstrations when a TCAR member is threatened with deportation. If there are more people then it puts more pressure on the Government. It is quite simple, together we are stronger and the more people we are, the stronger we are. Members should make sure the TCAR secretaries have your name, address and phone number. Every time you come to a demonstration or meeting you should sign-in this is so the secretaries know who the members are.
*If you have special circumstances which mean you cannot come, for example if you are ill, then please contact the TCAR committee and an exception can be made. Perhaps there is another way you can stay active in TCAR.
If you are an asylum seeker, you can also fill in a membership form in case you need emergency help. Please photocopy the most important pages of your case and attach a photo of yourself and your family. If you ever get taken to a detention centre the TCAR press group can quickly send your photo to the newspapers and it might help stop your deportation. The membership form is not compulsory: it is a personal decision. Please discuss any questions you have with the committee or in a TCAR meeting.
What is the TCAR committee?
Any member of TCAR can stand on the committee. If English is not your first language, THIS DOES NOT MATTER. We are here to stop deportation and fight for asylum rights, not write and speak perfect English.
The following positions are active: secretary, treasurer, chairperson, press group coordinator, publicity group coordinator, emergency support group coordinator, Pledge of Resistance coordinator.
The TCAR committee is elected by the General Meeting. Committee members and TCAR groups carry out the important work of organising TCAR work. There is an organising meeting every week, which is open to everyone - not just committee members.
Help needed with the committee
TCAR always needs more help. There are many things you can do and you don't always need to speak English. TCAR needs help to make its own website, to publish a newsletter, to publicise TCAR better, to involve more groups and individuals in TCAR, to translate documents, to make contacts with the press, to help with the children...and much more. The best way to get involved is to come to a weekly meeting on a Saturday and see how you can help. Please email tynesidecarn@yahoo.co.uk for more information. We need more people to make TCAR stronger
Other ways to help TCAR
Sign the pledge of resistance
Families are being snatched from our communities during the night. Would you be prepared to come out and protest early in the morning if a family near you was snatched? Would you help a family of asylum seekers knock door to door in their community and ask others for support? Please let us know where you live and what you can do. If you need support, TCAR committee members can come and visit you to explain in more detail.

Join TCAR Demonstrations

TCAR is receiving media attention but only because we have people out on the streets demonstrating. Can you commit to helping at street stalls or in drop-in centres? Publicising demonstrations in your local community? Will you come to TCAR emergency demonstrations outside the Government Offices North East for families that have been snatched? Contact TCAR to be put on a text out list or email list and keep up to date with the latest demonstrations.
Help TCAR Fundraise
TCAR needs financial support for printing costs, banner material, room hire, phone and transport costs. Can you make a regular financial contribution? Could you hold a fundraising party? Can you play any instruments for a fundraising gig? Do you have any more ideas for fundraising? Click here to download a standing order form and donate to TCAR.
Help with individual campaigns
TCAR is a union. We want to help our members. We need help preparing files both before and after people are snatched. For example we need help collecting statements from children's schools, photos of asylum seekers under threat. When a family is snatched we need people who can drop everything to do what is necessary to stop the deportation.
Any contribution large or small would help TCAR. Please get in touch if you have more questions, if you want to join or if you can help in any way.
